Good Oral Health Is Easier Than You Think!

It’s easy for most of us to underestimate the importance of oral health. You brush once in the morning to get rid of “morning breath,” then you brush again at night to make sure you’re not feeding plaque as you sleep. But keeping in good oral health means more than just brushing – it means flossing, rinsing occasionally with a good mouthwash, and regular checkups with a trusted family dentist. In Newtown and Langhorne, that means visiting the office of Dr. Mark A. Weglos and his team of experienced dental professionals.

Poor oral health can lead to any of a several complications, from bad breath to tooth loss. At Comprehensive Family Dentistry, we can educate you and your family on the risks of poor oral care:

Oral Health Can Prevent Cavities and Tooth Loss Cavities are caused by tooth decay, which is in turn caused by bacteria which convert sugars into acids. These acids can dissolve the protective enamel that coats our teeth. Without proper oral health, these acids can damage teeth beyond repair, sometimes calling for extreme measures like root canal and extraction.

Oral Health Can Prevent Gingivitis This is the inflammation of the soft tissue surrounding the teeth. It’s caused by bacterial plaque that collects between the gums and teeth, and can be identified by mouth sores and swollen, painful gums. If unchecked, gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease.

Oral Health Can Prevent Periodontitis Periodontitis is similar to gingivitis in that the gums become inflamed, but it’s much more advanced. At its worst, it involves the progressive loss of alveolar bone, or the sockets which anchor the teeth in place. It also eats away at the ligaments and connective tissue fibers that connect tooth to bone. If left unchecked, it can lead to the loss of whole teeth. Look for excessive redness, or bleeding of the gums when brushing or eating hard foods such as apples.

Oral Health Can Prevent Bad Breath At Comprehensive Family Dentistry, we offer bad breath management, to combat the embarrassment of halitosis. Bad breath can be caused by the ailments above, or it can simply be a symptom of poor oral health. It’s easily controlled, and we can help.

At Comprehensive Family Dentistry, oral care is what we do. Sure, we provide orthodontics, geriatric dentistry, teeth whitening and implant dentistry. We also perform the classics, like gum therapy, root canals and porcelain veneers. But the best oral care program starts right at your bathroom sink.

  • Brushing. You should brush your teeth as frequently as is convenient – at least three times a day. Keeping a spare toothbrush in the shower can make things go more quickly in the morning.
  • Flossing. Just as important as brushing, flossing removes plaque from between teeth and decreases the likelihood of gum disease. Flossing after meals removes food particles from between teeth, depriving them of the chance to accelerate tooth decay.
  • Mouthwash. Mouthwash doesn’t eliminate the need for brushing and flossing, but it can kill germs that cause plaque, bad breath and gingivitis.
