Is It Time To Start Looking For a New Dentist?

You might need a new dentist if your current dentist isn't using the most advanced technology. Make sure you're working with a dentist who keeps abreast of the latest developments in oral care. Most importantly, though, make sure your dentist isn't working with outmoded technology. Does he offer bone reshaping and contouring for denture wearers? Micro-thin veneers? Onlays instead of simple crowns? Be sure you're not dealing with someone who's stuck in the 1980s.

You might need a new dentist if you hate going to the dentist. What's the number one reason most people give for not going to the dentist regularly? It isn't pain, or the sound of the drill, or the prospect of having root canal therapy. It's humiliation. Some dentists out there still think the best way to get patients to take better care of their teeth is to shame them into it. If your dentist isn't being a sensitive medical care provider, it might be time to switch to a new one. Find a new dentist who understands your concerns, and doesn't browbeat you into making decisions.

You might need a new dentist if your current dentist doesn't offer a broad enough range of services. Even if all you need right now is regular checkups and cleaning, it's important to ensure that your dentist has a plan for every possibility. Does your dentist offer implant and cosmetic dentistry? If you have kids, can he take care of them? Will he be able to take care of your teeth as you get older, or provide dentures if you lose teeth? Make sure he has an extensive menu of services.

You might need a new dentist if you feel you're not fully educated on how to take care of your teeth and gums. Your dentist should actively communicate with you when it comes to regular dental care. He can't be there to clean your teeth every day, so he should make sure you're doing your level best to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Sure, he'll make more money if he has to give you root canal therapy every few months, but your continued good health is more important. Make sure he responds to your questions with more than just pamphlets.
