Extractions: They're Not The End of the World

No dentist likes performing tooth extractions. And no patient likes having a tooth extracted. Sometimes, though, it's a necessary evil. But don't worry too much. A dentist rarely extracts a tooth without having a plan to replace it somehow.

Here's how most dentists handle the aftermath of extractions.

Save as much of the tooth as possible. There are times the patient gets lucky, and extractions aren't necessary. In cases like these, your dentist can remove the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth, and replace it with a crown, an inlay or an onlay -- types of artificial teeth that are permanently cemented onto the remaining tooth structure. Talk to your dentist about whether this is possible. You may need a root canal in the affected tooth, but it's always best to save as much of your own teeth as possible.

Dentures. If you've had multiple extractions, you may be a good candidate for dentures. This is particularly true if the lost teeth are adjacent to one another, or if they're all on either the top or bottom of your mouth. Your dentist will take a cast of your bite and, along with a specialist in dental sculpture, will create a set of dentures that match your remaining teeth precisely. Dentures are easier to care for than they've been in the past, and you can wear them for longer periods of time.

Implant Dentistry. Your dentist may be able to implant new teeth directly into your jaw. You'll need to have enough intact bone structure in which to implant the tooth, and your gums will need to be healthy enough to accept the implants. But if you're a good candidate, your dentist will be able to replace your extractions with new, artificial teeth.

The dentists at Comprehensive Family Dentistry can talk with your and your family about options for dealing with potential extractions. Give us a call today to schedule a checkup.
