Because of tooth decay, injury or periodontal disease, many people lose all of their natural teeth, particularly as they advance in age. When this happens, eating and speaking become more difficult, and the facial muscles sag, accelerating wrinkles. With support from dentures, many of these things can be avoided.
When you first get a new pair of dentures, they may feel awkward until you get used to them. But like contact lenses or glasses, you’ll eventually become accustomed to your new dentures. Over the years that you have your dentures, you may occasionally need to visit your dentist to have them adjusted, or to reshape or contour parts of your mouth to more easily retain your dentures.
At Comprehensive Family Dentistry in Newtown, Dr. Mark Weglos and his staff pride themselves on their proprietary five-step process for creating custom dentures. It usually takes less than a month.
We’ll help you choose the most natural-looking dentures to fit your face, and what you’re used to seeing. Dentures may even improve the look of your smile and help fill out the appearance of your face and profile.
Creating new dentures is a multi-step process. First, your dentist will take measurements of your jaw, and take a series of impressions. After this, he’ll create models in the shape of the dentures to be made. You’ll try these models out, and once you’ve given your dentist all the information he needs, he’ll use these as a template from which to make the final set of dentures. After this, you’ll have adjustments made as necessary.
It’ll take a bit of practice. To get used to your new dentures, start with soft foods, and cut your meals into small pieces. Chew slowly, on both sides of your mouth. Gradually you’ll be able to return to your regular diet. But be careful with bones and shells, and remember that very hard or sticky foods may harm your dentures.
The first and best rule is to be gentle when handling your dentures – if you drop them, they may break. But you’ll also need to brush your dentures daily, as with natural teeth. When you’re not wearing your dentures, keep them in water or a soaking solution.
