Are Porcelain Veneers Right For Me?

Maybe it’s because you finally managed to quit smoking, and now you want to put that period of your life – yellow teeth and all – behind you. Maybe it’s because you’re tired of people thinking you have something stuck between your front teeth (and you know it’s just a stain). Or maybe you’re just ready to have a picture-perfect smile.

Whatever the cause, you’re wondering whether porcelain veneers are right for you.

Porcelain veneers are a big step for anyone. They’re not cheap, so it’s a big decision financially. But if you’re ready for it, there’s no reason not to make the jump forward. Almost anyone who has a full set of healthy teeth is eligible for porcelain veneers.

But maybe you’ve heard the myths. Maybe you’ve heard porcelain veneers are actually bad for your dental health. Or maybe you’ve heard they give you a bad case of “chipmunk cheeks.” Or that they damage your teeth beyond repair.

But don’t worry – your dentist will be able to tell whether porcelain veneers are right for you, and a good dentist won’t push a procedure if it’s going to be bad for your teeth.

Still concerned? Here are a few important facts regarding porcelain veneers to keep in mind:

  • Porcelain veneers can be painless. While older techniques were irreversible and required the removal of tooth material, newer processes allow the dentist to bond the veneer directly to your existing tooth.
  • Porcelain veneers can be customized. Don’t go with a dentist who uses a template. Porcelain veneers can now be modeled to your specific bite.
  • The state of your teeth can affect the operation time. Bonding porcelain veneers to your front teeth can take longer if you have substantial fillings in your front teeth. But it’s not impossible.
  • Porcelain veneers shouldn’t be installed by just anyone. Installation is tricky, and is different for each individual. Make sure you’re working with a dentist you can really trust.
  • Porcelain veneers won’t protect your teeth from cavities. It’s still possible to get cavities in the part of your teeth not covered by the veneers. So keep brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist regularly!
